For the same reason that people today believe that money is real. The whole world goes after money even though there actually is no such ‘thing’ as money. It is purely an invention of peoples’ minds – an idea they’ve come up with to replace bartering. So they take bits of paper and metal amalgums and call it money. Now, gold is real. You get gold out of the ground and turn it into ingots that are worth vast amounts of this intangible entity, money. You get silver out of the ground, and diamonds etc but the bottom line is that they are gold, silver and diamonds. They are not money. Money does not actually exist. But to all intents and purposes, people treat this non-existent ‘thing’ as if it was real. So with gods – they don’t actually exist. But in peoples’ minds they do, and people live and act as if such non-existent ideas affect their lives. To all intents and purposes they are real. Yet they are nothing more than ideas!
