the irish community started arriving in large numbers to the states from the 1840’s onwards as such they were the ‘newest’ immigrant community in the USA at this time (Italians and others would not start arriving in massive numbers until the 1880’s, displacing the by now more established Irish communities) as they were the ‘new’ people they were the poorest having arrived with virtually no funds and as such they ended up living in the worst areas of the cities (the cheapest run down parts of town) basically these immigrants had no relatives with jobs waiting for them, no already established communities set up and waiting for them etc as such they tended to do the lowest types of jobs, jobs which paid badly and/or were high risk, jobs that no one else wanted to do, (maids and servants in the big house’s, police officers, casual labourers on buildings/docks etc,)as other longer established communities had already moved up the social ladder and had better paying safer jobs shop keepers, m
