Oil. Iraq was broke after the Iran/Iraq war and Kuwait kept selling oil real cheap. This meant that Iraq couldn’t make very much money rebuilding. That pissed them off and they blamed Kuwait of drilling oil on their land, by slanting their drill bits to go under Iraq. It was an excuse, as all that stuff is decided and divided by geologists and lawyers with agreement of how the funds are dispersed… called royalties. Since Kuwait loaned them a bunch of money to buy arms to fight Iran, they wanted Kuwait to either quit slat drilling or forgive their debt. Kuwait wouldn’t, so Saddam said, “I’ll show you what kind of a pipsqueak country you are.” Well, in Arabic pipsqueak means something every nasty. So Kuwait fired back and said, “You’re a monkey’s uncle.” Since Saddam was already an uncle that meant he was being accused of incest so he sent in his Republican Guards (old guard politics) to bring about a change.
