The Blitz is the term for the Battle of Britain. It is a varient of the term blitzkreig, or lightning war. This method of systematically destroying your enemy was designed by Hitler's Nazis. The first step would be sending in high altitude bombers to soften up your target, then Stuka dive bombers for more strategic targets. Then you would send in tanks and heavy armor to take out any entrenched targets and finally you would send in infintry to mop up whatever was left. With Great Britain this plan would not work (England being an island) so Germany engaged in the Blitz. A 57 day bombardment of England starting on September 7, 1940. The purpose was to destroy England's will to fight and soften them up for a landing that fortunately never took place.  more
