Why did the colonists write the Declaration of Independence?

To be free of taxation without representation. Freedom of religion, Speech, the right to own land and a home. To work your own land and not to work only for the king. If you talked bad about the king you could be whipped or even sent back to England. Freedom to own ones land. Most of us all want to be home owners and in England only the king and the landlords owned land. the rest were surfs, or servants is another word for the same thing. To protect ones right you had to set up a Gov. by the people and for the People, with a legal system that wasn’t like the kings, but of free men, (women didn’t have rights back then, That came later in the 19th Century.
The declaration of Independence was the official note saying that we are our own country. It was part of the succession to Britain. The Declaration was not set up as the constitution as in rights that we have. It is important to protect this because it is a note that declares we are a Country not a colony of Britain and proud to be the U.S.A. The actual rights of the U.S. was written in the constitution of the United States which since then has become very polluted from it’s original meaning and structure.
