Fundraising totals for Shawnee’s annual Relay for Life event fell short this year, Tina Wellman, event chair, said. “Our goal was to reach $83,000 this year,” Wellman said. “We raised $80,700. But we are hoping more will donate so we can still meet our goal.” Welch said 20 teams participated in the event, along with numerous individuals. The top two teams, those who raised the most money, were Oasis Lawn Care, $10,000, and Finley and Cook, more than $8,000. Other top teams included Shawnee Public Schools, Unity Hospital and Exxon Mobile. “It was really something for such an important cause,” Wellman said. Wellman’s 23-year-old son was diagnosed with cancer at 16, which inspired her to become a part of the Relay for Life fundraiser, This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society fundraising event. To donate to Shawnee’s Relay for Life, call Wellman at 405-990-6280 or mail donations to Shelly Welch P.O. Box 1447 Shawnee, OK 74802-1447. Sources:
