Why did the US government change the capital from New York, NY to Washington D.C.?

Washington took his oath on a balcony in New York, but New York was never an established capital. Philadelphia was used as a temporary capital for 10 years, I believe, until a permanent place was established in the District of Columbia and it was named after President Washington: Washington, DC.  more
