Why Do Air Conditioning Units Freeze?

Both window air-conditioners and outdoor heat pumps can collect ice on the system's cooling coils if the units are not operating correctly. Sometimes the problem is due to mechanical malfunction, but if ordinary maintenance has been skipped, there might be simpler causes for icing up.
