Why do aircraft dim cabin lights before takeoff and landing?

I was an air stewardess for 8 years… It is so that in the event of a crash landing/emergency landing you as a passenger would not be night blind… Try being in a room with the lights on then turning them off and finding your way around… for a few seconds you are ‘night blind’ … this is the adjustment period where your eyes are getting used to the light being dimmer…. the alternative of this is if you are in a darkened room and someone puts the light on … your eyes are ‘blinded by the light’ In an emergency situation the cabin crew dont want passengers grappling around … being unable to see.. seconds are vital.
