Why do americans think republicans are conservatives ?
You are confusing the names of American parties with the older meanings of the words. In America it is a moot point because of course we became a republic a rather long time ago. This doesn’t stop our politicians and the executive from assuming many of the trappings of royalty. The French Republicans certainly weren’t conservative, and weren’t content just to kill their nobility but to kill priests and redo the calendar. In the event the Democratic party in the US is certainly not the only democratic party in the US. In many ways they aren’t democratic at all. Most American republicans are more conservative than the British conservatives, so i gather from reading about UK politics. The US Democrats are roughly equivalent to the UK Labour party. The UK is a republic too, only they keep their royals around for purely sentimental reasons. At least that is how it looks to me here in Chicago.
