when the blood arises out of the heart it is under extreme pressure we know that the arteries carry blood away from the heart so to take this pressure they are thick as otherwise they may tear.

Bcoz the blood flows thru it with a large pressure than in viens. If they are not elastic than they would rupture due to pressure. For smooth functioning they are more elatic than viens.
