You think it’s bad now! I was “educated” in the 60s and 70s, and I have often said I felt it was for factory fodder. In fact, one of my teachers stated that the only reason we were given homework was to keep us off the streets at night; and that we were in an all-girls’ school (boys and girls who didn’t pass the 11 plus were separated back then) was because it was thought that “girls of lower intelligence are more likely to get into trouble with boys”. Unfortunately, that was not just her opinion. It really was the scientific reasoning of the day. What made it more frustrating was that she also told us some in the class had missed qualifying for grammar school by less than one point. It was only years later that a TV programme exposed that, during this period, girls had to have more marks than boys to get into the grammar schools, due to the boys not doing so well at academic studies.
