Why do chickens constantly lay eggs?
Poultry farmers take advantage of the fact that chickens will instinctively keep replacing the egg they laid in their nest the previous day whenever they discover it is missing. They keep on replacing and replacing the missing egg day after day. Chickens don’t lay eggs at night when it’s dark outside, so, to increase productivity, poultry farmers keep their chicken coops lit with sun lamps all night long so the chickens will even lay the replacement egg during the night. Chickens ordinarily only lay one egg every 24 hours, but lighting a chicken coop full of hundreds of chickens 24/7 means there will be eggs in the collecting bins around the clock for the poultry farmer to collect. Chickens are not the only birds that replace missing eggs by laying new ones. Among birds in the wild this is very common, though not a general rule.
