Why do Christians pray for the dead?

If God has sent someone to hell because they committed mortal sin (“sins unto death” 1 John 5:16), there are no prayers for that person. It is done. But for those who have not committed “sins not unto death (venial sins)” of 1 John 5:16: There is a concept of Purgatory from 1 Cor 3:15. It is not heaven because the person must “suffer loss” by fire – purified somehow because nothing unclean can go into heaven (Rev). But the person is not in hell because they are saved.
