Why do dentist always seem to put in gold fillings instead of white?
Gold fillings are NOT cheaper than porcelain. I’m not sure where people are getting their information. Take a look at what Gold is selling for these days. The price of gold is through the roof! There are many materials to choose from when filling teeth. Some options are definitely more expensive than others. Filling options: Amalgam / Silver fillings: Advantages: Great restorative filling. affordable. It lasts a long time but can crack teeth over many years. Good material to use on compromised teeth with deep / large decay removal when a patient can’t have a crown placed on the tooth. Disadvantages: Not esthetic or as pretty as other materials. Public perception that the mercury in amalgams is bad for you, which is not “fully” supported by the research literature. Composite (white colored) fillings: Advantage: Very esthetic and can match your natural tooth very closely. Very affordable. Filling bonds to the tooth.
