Why do elements in the same family group have similar properties?

the elements in the same group have similar valence shells electronic configuration i.e. same no. of electrons in outer orbitals ….like elements of group 1 have ns1(where n is the principal quantum no. of outermost shell) valence shell electronic configuration…like sodium has valence shell electronic configuration as 3s1,,potassium has 4s1,etc…now as all elements in the same group have same valence shell electronic configuration so they will have same chemical and physical properties…
