Why do engineers still use the British system of measuring units (inches, pounds) instead of the metric system?

Tradition and current practice (even if it makes no sense). For example, if we went metric, we would need all new fastners, all new stock sizes of raw material, and would have to re-tool all machine tools which are currently calibrated in inches. Plus, there would be two versions of each product running around (“Is this a metric or a #%&$* English screw thread?!”). To date, this has just been too costly for industry to do.
