Why do female figure skaters even bother to wear skirts?

Skating dresses actually just evolved that way. If you see old pictures of women skating, they’re usually wearing long, heavy dresses, which just became the thing to wear for skating. As skating grew in popularity and into a sport, the skirts got shorter….with the help of a little lady named Sonja Henie. The long skirts do get in the way when jumping and quickly moving on the ice. The costumes added to the pagentry of the sport. There are rules that govern what skaters wear in competition. I believe in regular competition, it is stated women must have skirts, unless they opt to wear pants/body suits, which is a rule that has changed within the past few years, but you don’t see female skaters going that route very often. Usually ice dancers wear longer skirts than freestyle or pairs skaters (not always though). I don’t think just a leotard-type costume would be allowed in competition…..and if you work hard enough to get to competition, you sure don’t want your outfit to blow it all
