Why do gutka and pan masala manufacturers allege that cigarette industry is behind the moves to ban them?
It is incorrect to make an allegation like that. It’s not in our interest to initiate a ban on any form of tobacco. We firmlybelieve that tobacco is a legal product for adult consumption. Tobacco track • India is the largest producer of tobacco after China and the US. • Tobacco cultivation employs about 6 million farmers and 20 million labourers. • 54 per cent of tobacco is used in beedis, 27 per cent in paan masala, snuff, chewing tobacco, etc, and 19 per cent in cigarettes. • The government earned excise of Rs 5214.32 crore from tobacco products in 1997-98, contributing 12 per cent of all India excise collections. • Cigarettes contribute 87 per cent of excise, beedis 6 per cent, and others 7 per cent. • Tobacco exports were valued at Rs 1061 crore in 1997-98. • Tobacco also feeds ancillaries like processing, packing, advertising and exports. –(Source: Tobacco Institute of India) Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
