Why do I fall asleep after eating foods high in refined sugar?

0

For quite some time, I have noticed that if I eat foods that are high in refined sugar (candy bars with or w/out chocolate, Twizzlers, gummi bears, etc) I fall asleep within 30 minutes, even if I am doing work, driving the car, etc. Also, in the minutes between eating the sugar and falling asleep I have a very short temper, and can go off for no reason. I have begun to actually use this to my advantage – namely, if I have trouble falling asleep at night I will eat something high in sugar, and I will usually be asleep in a half-hour. While useful at times, this just doesn’t seem normal to me, since most people talk about how eating sugar wires them up, and keeps them from sleeping. I have a negative screening result for diabetes, and it does not run in my family. Anyone know what’s going on with me?
