Why do little girls like fairytales about pretty princesses?

Kids like imaginary things. “Boys” may pretend to be race car drivers, construction workers, police officers, firefighters, etc. “Girls” may pretend to be princesses or mommys or whatever. In both situations, it gives the little one a feeling of ‘power’ — pretending to be someone strong and powerful and respected and needed. So when they are read these stories, they are just putting themselves into the story– nothing else. Little ones do not see themselves as anything other than beautiful and loved. It isn’t until later that the doubts and lack of self confidence sets in. There has been a movement lately to ‘rewrite’ the traditional ‘princess who needs a man to rescue her’ stories. Like take the movie Shrek– the second movie is great! The princesses sit around waiting for Prince Charming or some other man to come and help them and nothing happens.
