Why do managers have to approve participation in the VSP? What level of management needs to approve my application?

Individual department managers are best positioned to determine the viability of any given VSP application given that the position from which the employee separates cannot be refilled for 18 months. A voluntary separation will likely necessitate redistribution of workload, rewriting of position descriptions, as well as process and procedure revisions. The VSP application is vetted through several management levels on its way to approval/denial. Review begins with the supervisor and department head. If the application is deemed viable and complete, it then is forwarded to the division Dean/Vice Chancellor and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources for additional review and confirmation. Employee notification follows thereafter.
