Why do men go bald much more often than women?
It is something that almost 40% of men (and women) will have to come to terms with by the age of 35. Contrary to popular belief, women can also expereince genetic hair loss. The primary difference is that women rarely go completely bald as men do. One thing that is different from baldness in men is that while females also have thinning of the hair and shorter growth cycles, there is no recession – the front hairline remains about the same. Interestingly, when men with prostate cancer are given estrogen therapy, they lose less hair. Side note: If men are castrated for whatever reason, they don’t go bald at all. YIKES! Castration before or shortly after puberty will prevent baldness. ” Castration, lack of DHT-receptors/enzymes (testicular feminization) , feminine status block the progression of balding and hair loss. However, women and castrated males have other sources of androgens and can still experience pattern loss.”
