Why do men rent their tuxedos and women purchase their wedding dresses when they get married?

Not all men and women where formal attire to their weddings. I have been married twice and wore a tuxedo on neither occasion. I wore a suit to my first wedding and a jacket and tie to the second – my hot pepper tie. Thinking back over all the weddings I’ve attended over the years, I don’t recall very many where the groom actually did wear a tuxedo. It is certainly less common today then it was 30 years ago. Nor did either of my wives choose to wear a traditional wedding dress, white or otherwise. Both purchased a dress they liked and wore that. That allowed them to wear the dress whenever they wanted afterwards and not stick it in a cupboard for the rest of their lives or sell it to someone else second-hand. The choice of what to wear and whether you rent or buy is yours.

I believe that it a wedding dress is a symbol of sentimental value. A bride wants her look to be unique and “one of a kind.”
