This is due to Church Tradition- scripture states that women should cover their heads while in church. However like a lot of things in Orthodox Christianity this is a guideline- so at any church you will see some women who do wear a scarf on their head and some who don’t. As you can see from this photo of my church during communion http://www.lasvegasorthodox.com/PhotoGal… the Catholics used to do the same thing until vatican II. Now if the woman in question is wearing all black like this http://gallery.photo.net/photo/2562954-l… or this http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1050/5633… then she would be a nun.
