Why do people say moderate Muslims don denounce terrorism?
I think we’re looking for leaders in those countries where terrorism seems to spring from to stand up and denounce it. Like Arafat before he died, would denounce it in English and then renege on the denunciation in Arabic. It is pretty unrealistic to expect moderates in these breeding grounds to risk life and limb condemning terrorism but Muslims here doing it, just doesn’t cut it. Just an attempt at an explanation based on nothing but opinion.
I see what many Muslims say and then i see what many Muslims do and listen to what they say. I know a Muslim who said he denounced terrorism but said Jews were scum and needed to be eradicated. It is a short step from saying things to doing them. I do know a few moderate Muslims who denounce terrorism but they don’t denounce it anywhere but in private conversations. If someone blew up the towers in the name of the God of the Jews, then I would be screaming it from the rooftops that they did not represent Judaism. I also see some people denouncing it on one day and going on Al-Jazeera the next and saying how bad Jews and the West is. That is not denouncing terrorism. I appreciate your stance on terrorism though.
Well, if you are a moderate Muslim and denounce terrorism, good for you, keep at it, but as long as we see footage of people in Gaza celebrating in the streets during devastating terrorist attacks and riots caused by a newspaper printing representations of mohammad, the rest of us are going to continue to wonder why it is that your religion fosters such a blood thirsty culture of violence. Basically the public face of your religion has been hijacked by the most radical elements, people who are willing to give their lives just to kill innocent people (including children) who are guilty of no crime greater than not being a believer in Islam. In order for this perception to change, the silent moderates have to stand up and say, “those radicals are not who we are, we condemn them and they do NOT represent Islam”.
