Why do people vote for monstrosities like Silvio Berlusconi?
The political situation in Italy is a complex one, probably more than most countries on the planet. For example, we hear about the mafia and see them in films but here they do exist, corruption is rife and they have a huge influence on the political process. There’s also an element of voting for the ‘least worst’ as a great many politicians have a chequered history, some are on a personal ego trip, some are in it just for the money, or power, or all of the above. Berlusconi is a disgrace but he has to be put into context with what the other options are, and he has got certain things done where others have just talked about it. Here in the UK we are currently fuming over out politicians and their expenses claims but compared to the Politicians in Italy we are extremely lucky.
