Why do Preteens Throw Temper Tantrums?
Just as toddlers test their limits and try to find their independence, so too do preteens. Testing limits and searching for independence is frustrating as toddlers and preteens quickly find out. Frustration often leads to temper tantrums and hissy fits. Pushing limits, resisting authority, and bossy behaviors are common during these years. In addition, preteens are on the cusp of puberty. Hormones can begin kicking in as early around eight years old, especially amongst preteen girls. Hormonal changes in and of themselves can lead to emotional outbursts, sassy attitudes, and uncontrolled anger. Add in the social pressures and school room stresses that children in their preteen years undergo and you have a recipe for temper tantrums.
