Why do pubs blame cheap supermarket beer for the slump in sales? ?

It’s not that supermarket beer is cheap, it’s the price of beer in pubs that’s expensive! My friends and I can’t afford to spend that long in our local pubs now when a pint cost £3 or more. I bought a round for 3 people in my local last week and it came to £13. I live in a quiet countryside, Suffolk village, not central London, so we can’t understand why prices have gone up so much. We prefer to take turns to have nights round each others houses now…nice food, reasonably priced alcohol and good company with out the hassle of rules and unfair prices! I definitely think the smoking ban has quite a lot to do with emptier pubs now, but so many pubs are building really good sheltered outdoor smoking areas now, where everyone can sit comfortably (with outdoor heaters) whether they smoke or not. I do think it’s more to do with high prices combined with the fears of the ‘credit crunch’. I’m the only non-smoker in my group of friends; If we’re sitting indoors, I have the job of looking after

Actually in our area pubs have been complaining about the cheap supermarket lagers since long before 2007. It’s not about the smoking ban.
