Why do sailors wear bell-bottom trousers?
“Over the years many reasons have been put forth to explain this peculiarly nautical style. These range from that old, tired war horse, ‘Sailors did not generally wear shoes, so their trousers were flared to protect bare feet,’ to ‘bell bottoms were easier to roll up when conditions required a sailor to climb the rigging.’ Most theories as to the origin of this style have little credibility and fall into the category of wishful thinking.
