Dr. Elias: Howard Gardner expressed this well in his multiple intelligences theory. He shows that human beings have tremendous capacity. It’s not just capacity in math and language — it’s capacities in all areas. The most complete and fulfilled human beings are people that work through their multiple intelligences’ strongest modalities. The same thing is going to be true in the academic domain. Even beyond interpersonal and intrapersonal, the academic domains need to be linked to all the multiple intelligences. We don’t know what a given child’s great modality is going to be. We don’t know if it’s going to be kinesthetic or interpersonal. If we want their knowledge to take flight — to have the opportunity to develop and expand in exciting and meaningful ways — we have to give kids the opportunity to channel their learning through the modalities that they are the best versed in.
