Why do sea cucumbers vomit their intestines when threatened?
If the predator stops to eat the intestines, the cucumber may avoid the rest being eaten – the predator may be distracted or satisfied. If it can regrow the intestines, it is worth a try. Even if it only saves it one time in ten, the it is better than sitting there doing nothing – which is all they are equipped to do otherwise.
