Why do so many people have a compulsion to play loud background music at parties?

If anyone can give you a sensible answer I would be interested to hear it! I have been asking the same question for years, and for the same number of years leaving ‘parties’ early. Loud music is for Discos not private parties, which should be convivial occasions with friends and family, meeting new people, who could, except for the loud, often unsuitable music, become potential friends. I sound like Victor Meldrew! I love music, and often in my car I play music loudly, when I’m in my house (which is in the country) on my own, I do the same, but when anyone visits my house for a cup of tea or a drink the music/TV is turned off so that the conversation is the focal point, when I have a party there is music playing but I doubt anyone could actually tell you who or what was being played. Music is also a personal preference, I have a reasonably eclectic taste in music, but anything that to me appears to be ‘tuneless’ – garage, punk and various other types, which have strange names that I ca
