Why do so many religious fundamentalists reject scientific evolution?

The way I see it is that it does not matter wether or not you believe in scientific evolution but how you believe in it. Do you think species evolve in a hasardeous way, or do you see a “Shaping Hand” beneath guiding the evolution in all its steps. In thruth scientific evolution has nothing to do with religion and it is a giganstic misstep to hold that you have to believe in one or the other.
