Why do some URLs show as plain text only? Why do some others point to locations different from the plain text URL shown?

The TIFF mailing list archive spans over 10 years of mailing list activity. Most of the URLs that are over a few years old, are not valid anymore. It is frustrating for users, and bad for crawlers, to have so many dead links. That’s why our content management system checks these URLs regularly. Dead URLs are shown as plain text only, valid URLs are shown as true HTML links. Some URLs are no longer valid, but the original document is still on-line somewhere, and its location is known to us. In that case, the original URL is still shown in the text, while the ‘href’ part of the link points to the correct new location.
