Why Do We Celebrate MLK Day & Black History Month?
Martin Luther King Day and Black History Month represent a time for us to look back at the strides we have made towards equality and understanding since Dr. King first envisioned his “Beloved Community,” and to visualize the actions that will help us achieve that goal. Through nonviolence, service, and respect for one another, Dr. King showed us that problems such as discrimination, prejudice and social injustice can be overcome. The impact of his actions and ideas still resonate today, continuing to guide us as our nation addresses its most pressing needs: poverty, economic turmoil, and education.
