Why do we have ear wax. And is it a natural insect repelant?

According to the wasp which spun around and around my ear while I was half awake/asleep when I was 7, and then proceeded to sting me, NO IT IS NOT A BLOODY INSECT REPELLENT. ear wax is there to protect your head and eardrum from insects or dirt that may fall/fly into your ear, it gets trapped in the earwax and so stops you getting infections of having your eardrum/head get infections or viruses. I dont know how true it is (though I can see how it would make sense) but I also have heard that ear wax can keep your eardrum/ head warm.
