Why do we now place Composite Resin fillings instead of the old Metal Amalgams?

Silver amalgam fillings are metal. As such, they expand and contract as we eat and drink hot and cold foods. If a metal filling is large and it expands, the tooth breaks. If it contracts, gaps are formed between the filling and the tooth, increasing the likelihood of bacteria and decay getting into the tooth. Our Intra-Oral Video Camera is able to discover these gaps before they cause problems, such as sensitivity, pain, and the need for root canal treatment. After removing the old metal fillings, we have seen that about two of every three teeth do, indeed, have some decay under them!
