Connecticut General Statutes require all public schools to provide transportation for students to the schools in the communities in which they reside. In providing such transportation, school systems are required to make their decisions based upon the safety of students were the students to walk to school. The Westport Board of Education has determined that the lack of sidewalks throughout the Town of Westport and the dangers of students walking on our highly trafficked main roads require providing transportation services for virtually all students who attend the public schools. Similarly, by state statute, the school system also is required to provide transportation to resident students who attend the only private school in Westport, i.e., Greens Farms Academy.
