It’s because of the biofeedback loop being broken when they are at work. When the baby goes through a growth spurt, it needs more food. It’s starts being hungry every 2-3 hours instead of every 4 hours until the mother’s breasts start producing more. But at work, the mother doesn’t feel that feedback. So, the person caring for the baby supplements with formula to feed the hungry baby. Each time this happens, the percentage of milk being supplied by the mother drops. Also, breasts don’t supply milk on demand. I worked 6 hours 3 days a week with no pumping facilities. I found it hard to pump up a full bottle’s worth when I was home because I needed the full 3-4 hours to make that milk. If it was time for feeding, the baby got the milk.
