Why do you think conservative talk radio has flourished while liberal/progressive talk radio has floundered?
Obviously, the people at Air America thought it had a chance. Those aren’t dumb people. So maybe it’s just that they haven’t found the right on-air talent yet, and it could still work. Some people will try to tell you that it’s because liberals don’t respond well to the sort of harangues and echo-chamber effect you get from right-wing talk radio. That’s rubbish. Hang out on any liberal message board (e.g. Salon.com) and you’ll find exactly the same sort of name-calling and “ditto”-ing you hear on Rush Limbaugh. The liberals do have their own forms of entertainment-propaganda. The Daily Show is wildly successful and very liberally slanted. And most editorial cartoonists slant left. Neither of those is quite as one-sided as conservative talk radio: you’ll never see Hillary Clinton get any sort of respectful treatment from Rush Limbaugh, but John McCain is very popular on the Daily Show.
