When kittens are young they knead on their mothers to stimulate the flow of milk. When they do this at a later stage, it is a fond memory of their kittenhood. It also may have something to do with when they were weaned. Some think it is because they were weaned early and some think it is because they were weaned late. if you think about it, both of those reasons make sense. They either feel they need more weaning, or they suckled so long that they continue to feel the desire. I remember when I was young and used to stay all night with a friend who had a cat. This cat kneaded on me all night, and I remember never getting any sleep! She must have been an extremely happy cat 🙂 Mother cats also knead to prepare soft bedding for the kittens. That could be the reason for cats kneading on blankets. It is simply mimicking the mother and trying to make the bedding soft also! Usually cats will jump up when you are sitting still.
