Some modems report rings incorrectly! For example, we’ve seen a “Conexant HSF V92 56K Data Fax PCI Modem” report 5, 7, and 8 rings when the phone only rang 3 times. If this is a problem, you can try upgrading your modem drivers and/or firmware, or buy a new modem.
