We agree with the historic position that views the various creeds and confessions as invaluable, though not infallible, summaries of the Word of God. A creed (credo means I believe) is inevitable. Those who say that they affirm no creed but Christ have a creed, albeit an unwritten one. Sadly, we live in a non-credal age marked by an ignorance of historical Christianity. Most professing Christians today regard creeds or confessions of faith as man made traditions. They dont like anything that would define their relationship to God, that would infer their responsibility for their faith, that would imply that God has made an authoritative statement as to what they are to believe. They protest that their liberty would be injured to agree with a creed. The Christian creeds and confessions affirm the authority of Gods Word and provide the framework to help us rightly interpret it. A confession of our loyalty to the Bible is not enough.
