Why does CRAYOTHERM® phase change material from Kunze Folien reduce the total resistance of the thermal flow between two contact surfaces to a minimum ?

By the first rise in temperature, the material goes into a soft state and expands, resulting in the complete wetout of the contact surfaces. The material actively expands by 15 to 20%, expelling the remaining air pockets from the micropores, hence reducing the thermal contact resistance to a minimum. Phase change material offers an extra active property compared to the usual thermal grease which only works when pressure is applied. Once the first phase change has taken place and the material has expanded, it remains for ever in this condition, independently of the temperature.
