Why does DVD Region Coding exist in the first place?

Due to the ‘staggered’ movie release system, it was important that DVD movies were controlled in some way. When a feature film is made, only a certain amount of film reels are made for cinemas. To make film reels for every country worldwide at the same time would be expensive, so each continent receives film reels in a ‘staggered’ order. Typically, the film reels will be shown in America and Canada first, then shipped to Europe, then to Australia/Asia. As a result, DVD movies can sometimes be released in US at the same time/before movies are shown in cinemas in Europe/Asia. This makes it desirable to have a Code-Free DVD player.
