Why does European chocolate tend to be more bitter than American chocolate?

European’s tend to have less of a sweet tooth than we americans, so our chocolate is usually higher in sugar. Companies here tend to use milk chocolate which is sweeter, smoother and less chocolatie tasting than dark chocolate. Bittersweet, semisweet chocolate has a higher cocoa content giving it a more intense chocolate flavor, and that’s what we see a lot of coming from europe except Swiss chocolate, which seems to be a milk chocolate base confection.
