Why does fire need oxygen?

0

I wanted to add that oxygen is a requirement of fire, not combustion. An example is the number of underground “fires” in coal beds with absolutely no oxygen provided. These are completely contained fires under the ground and outside of any mines, and many active coal bed “fires” are in existence in Sutton, Alaska; Tennesse; Kentucky; and other states where tunnel mines exist. These are all smoldering fires that do not come to the surface and as such cannot be fought. A lot of people use fire and combustion interchangeably, when in fact they are two independant things.
