Why does iron rust?
Rust is the name for iron oxide. Iron combines with oxygen, iron or steel rusting is a process called corrosion. Three things are actually needed for iron to rust and that water, oxygen and of course iron. This process can be sped up when saltwater or rain water come in contact with the item that is suffering from corrosion or in the beginning stages.
