Why does my dishwasher make all my stainless steel kitchen utensils rust?

Unfortunately, few of us can afford utensils made of the highest grade stainless steel. Dishwashers, with their high temperatures, salt and strong detergents, are very aggressive and can corrode the sort of stainless steel utensils we regular Joes use.

The problem could be from Iron Oxides in your water supply. If you are using a good quality of stainless steel and still get rust spots it is the iron in the water. I serviced medical equipment for many years and have taken water samples and dipped stainless steel items into the samples and let dry and had rust spots show up due to iron in the water.. It is possible that you have a problem with your hot water tank lining going bad or it is in the water supply. To check dip your utensils into the cold tap water and allow to dry and compare to the ones that have been run in the dishwasher which should be connected to your hot water. If the rust spots show up on both you know it is the water supply.
